Percent or percentage points?
If a mortgage rate goes from 4% to 5%, it has risen by 1 percentage point, but by 25 percent. Lenders and newspapers mix the two up, so check which one is meant.
Questions people ask
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 15% of 240 is 0.15 x 240 = 36.
How do I work out percentage change?
Take the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 - 80) / 80 x 100 = 25% more.
How do I reverse a percentage?
Divide by 1 plus the percentage. If a price is £60 after a 20% rise, the original was £60 / 1.2 = £50.
